10 More Money Saving Tips!

As I am nearing the end of my adventures here in Australia I figured I would share more money saving tips with my fellow travelers. Below are 10 additional trips to help you save money that can be used on more exciting adventures.

10. If there is no rush, walk.
Public transport (or taxis) might be faster, but you pay for that speed. Most travelers don't have pressing deadlines with most of the things they set out to do. In those cases it is best for your pocket ... << MORE >>

Getting to Tasmania

Early explorers thought Tasmania was part of main land Australia until explorers finally sailed around enough to discover it was actually an island. Although, like Russia and Alaska, a land bridge develops during ice ages, which is how the Aboriginals of Tasmania originally got there. Currently there is no land bridge so the two ways to get over to Tassie are plane or boat. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, but you'll end up in Tasmania either way so you can't really go wrong. ...

This time the floods preceded me

Just a quick update. Maxwell and I have arrived in Hobart and will be exploring around for the next day before continuing on our tour of Tasmania. We arrived to lots of rain and ended up having to do the east coast portion of the tour in reverse due to flooding over the roads. This meant lots of driving, but we got to save the really pretty things for last (Bay of Fire and Wineglass Bay). I'll update photos and go into details about all we've been exploring later, but lets just say it's been awesome! ... << MORE >>

The Indian Pacific: Adelaide to Sydney

I've added the photos from the first half of our train journey.

—-

I made sure I was better prepared for the train this time. I brought a second jacket to use as a pillow and my travel towel for a blanket. Unfortunately, Maxwell lost his towel (he thinks he might have left it in the hostel), so I shared mine since it is quite long. We also stocked up on more fresh fruit ...

Adelaide, the 20 minute city

We arrived in Adelaide right between the Adelaide Fringe Festival and the Cilpsal 500 race. Obviously I didn't consider festival timing when creating the itinerary; otherwise we would have arrived a few days earlier or later so we could attend one. Such is life.

Adelaide is nicknamed "the 20 minute city" because it only takes about that long to drive to most points of interest outside of the city. Within town it is easy to walk or hop on public transport as ...

The Indian Pacific, Perth to Adelaide

I haven't had a chance to edit all the photos yet, but here you go

——-

Our train, the Indian Pacific, was leaving Perth at 11:55 am, so at about 9:55 we said farewell to Chomsky and Jet, and then Adrian drove us to the East Perth station. If Adrian hadn't been available we could have taken the Midland line, which is what I rode to work, to the station, but there was less hauling of baggage involved when being dropped off. ...

Perth, the most remote capital city in the world

I know it is a little odd to write about arriving in Perth when I just left, but better late than never.

———

When Maxwell and I arrived in Perth, we were both hitting the bottom of our bank accounts. This meant we had two priorities: one, find a cheap place to live, and two, get a job.

Perth. I liked the black swan decorations everywhere. Very ...

The Long Road From Broome To Perth

Broome is a lovely little city. Beautiful beaches, warm weather and big town services with a small town feel. I enjoyed our few days there, but with the mechnaical bills going up and the bank account going down, it was time to leave after a few days.

For those who are firmiliar with the Dixie Chicks and the song "Cowboy Take Me Away," the drive from Broome to Port Hedland more than fits the bill for a place where you can "look at the horizon and not see a building standing tall" and "be ... << MORE >>

Wine, Beer and Swimming Conclude Our Trip South

Our final day down south started nice and relaxed. We packed up the car and mapped out our day. Continuing up Caves Road we passed many more caves and wineries.

Margaret River winding to the Indian Ocean.

We stopped over at a couple of wineries, but it was midmorning so it felt a little odd to be doing wine tasting. ...

Lighthouses and Caves along Caves Road

Day three was our relocation day. I would have loved to stay and explore the Pemberton area more extensively, but I only had four days off work. We packed up our car, got gas and grabbed breakfast at the Pemberton Millhouse Café. It was quite good. I had porridge (oatmeal) and Maxwell had the big breakfast. The food and drinks were an excellent, stick to your ribs kind of meal. It wasn't a bad price either.
